Note — Luke writes that Jesus was “(as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli” (Luke 3:23). Two views are held by conservative scholars: Luke gives Mary’s line through her father Heli; or both lists are Joseph’s, one legal and one natural. Both lines meet at Salathiel and Zorobabel. Matthew arranges his list in three sets of fourteen (Matthew 1:17).
